Web29 May 2014 · Pretty common for the tail shaft to lose oil, then run the bearings dry, then bearings seize and break off the tailshaft, drop the drive shaft, and raise hell in general. The free play you are having at the shaft, with the brake drum off is NOT normal. Description you gave says, bearings are toast.

I got a noise coming from the transmission that sounds like 2 small gears running together. Doesn't mater if in park or in gear. Speeds up when rpm of motor is increased. Mech said needed new driveshaft as Ujoints were playing. Wanted $1100 for the fix (750 for parts and the balance for labor). You can feel a slight grove in the housing where the bearing sits. from the pic, you can see..
