WebMitchell leaves out a lot, but his Iliad feels like the Iliad (an aesthetic which any number of translations, both stricter and looser, fail to achieve). This one is like being run over by a chariot. In a good way! The adrenaline-driven battle scenes are lean-muscled and lethal; the character moments are poignant and lasting. WebThe Iliad has been translated a lot. Here's a New Yorker article comparing four versions; here's a page prepared by Ian Johnston with links to previews of several dozen more. (Johnston's translation isn't my favourite of them all, but he's a very very good egg for taking the trouble to make that page!) TL;DR: take out the Stephen Mitchell version.
